History of story telling

Story telling is a thousand of years old tradition. This method was adopted by different people to spend time, give information, create awareness and relate the events of past. For this purpose different people came up who were the centre of attraction, had vast knowledge and great communication skills. In the past story telling was used as a basic method to induce courage and strength in soldiers and fighters of that day to make them brave and dauntless.

This method of story telling was adopted mostly by the Egyptians, Greek and the travelers from different parts of earth. They used to give information and relate thrilling and exciting events. People in those days were greatly fascinated and motivated with such stories. Some of these stories were totally a part of an imaginary tale but they still left a deep impact on the listeners because these stories had a strong base of high morality, ethic and extremely strong values. Some of these stories even served as a proper guideline for different behaviors and actions related to human nature and ethics.

Story telling has changed its form according to the advancements in our life and methods of communication. Story telling till now is adopted by mothers to educate their children on religious and humanitarian grounds. This method has been very effective as according to statistics it has been proven that children show keen interest when someone is relating a story. They adopt the same good habits and learn to differentiate between good and bad, as it is written in the story books which a story tell narrates from. Shakespeare revolutionized the concept of storytelling and gave it a new life.

Benefits of storytelling and its effect on children

From many years story telling has been adopted as an effective tool towards the positive grooming of children. Children also find this as an extremely attractive and interesting method of learning new things. Parents, guardian or the teachers narrate stories on different positive topics in a very effective manner.

In schools teachers manage special periods for storytelling and at home parents usually find the time of night to narrate stories; often referred to as bedtime stories. A child must be made accustomed to the practice of listening stories at a very little age so that it becomes a regular habit. The trend adopted today is of spending too much time on computers, playing electronic games and watching television. This contributes very less towards the positive development of a child. So parents must include the practice of story telling for the positive development of their child. Story books which are being published nowadays lack in productive content and provide entertainment rather than positive development. So story books of prominent authors which contain useful content must be used to relate stories, as these stories will help in developing a creative and a positive mind of the child from the beginning. Storytelling also provides an opportunity to spend productive time with your children. The whole environment which is created during story telling offers a unique bond and serenity for the children.
